Shocking confession from the little man behind these TiVo Party Tonight posts: I’m clueless as to whether musicians who appear on Tavis Smiley perform as well as chat. Earle is worth watching regardless; his latest album, Townes (a covers record of songs penned by his late mentor, Townes Van Zandt), came out yesterday. On the other hand, there will be no shortage of political topics to dissect: Smiley should be especially engaged on Obama-related topics (the Prez has been on his show six times) as well as Earle’s pet issue of prisoners’ rights (given all-new context in the wake of the torture debate). You know how Van Zandt wrote the hit song “Pancho And Lefty”? Earle and Smiley = Lefty And Lefty.
