Eugene Mirman’s Guide To Modern Life: John Mulaney’s “The Top Part”

eugenelogoAlong with David Cross, Zach Galifianakis and Patton Oswalt, Eugene Mirman has liberated stand-up comedy from the zany fratboys and sweater-clad neurotics. Mirman’s latest album, God Is A Twelve-Year-Old Boy With Asperger’s (Sub Pop), isn’t representative of a “new breed” of comedy or a supposedly edgy advancement in humor; it’s a collection of smart, imaginative bits that embody the anger, absurdity and awkwardness of everyday life. You might also say it’s full of guffaws. Mirman, who also published a book this year (the mock-advice tome The Will To Whatevs) and regularly appears on HBO’s Flight Of The Conchords, is guest editing magnetmagazine.com this week. Read our Q&A with him.

johnmulaney8Mirman: What can I say about John Mulaney that hasn’t been said before? A lot, probably; mostly because of the limitless power of imagination: i.e. John Mulaney lives in a forest and teaches animals to use condoms, or John Mulaney’s father is a Griffin and his mother is the band Lynyrd Skynyrd. None of that is true, but what is true is that John Mulaney is a fantastic standup and very, very funny. The Top Part, recorded in San Francisco (who cares!), is one of the funniest standup albums I’ve heard in a long time. It is a perfect record to play at a standup record listening party. Topics include: alcohol abuse, mean-spirited trannies, goths, misunderstandings, the best bit about Law And Order and much, much more. Plus all the jokes are delivered in a style that makes you think he’s your buddy. Video after the jump.
