The Moog Makes MAGNET A Mix Tape

moogmix

The Moog is Hungary’s first original band to sing in English and tour Western Europe and the U.S, due to Soviet rule preventing previous generations from exposure to Western artists. Considering that the quintet creates an infectious blend of garage and pop rock while still letting its Eastern European roots show, we’re pretty happy that times have changed. The Moog is kicking off a full U.S. tour later this month in support of its second album, Razzmatazz Orfeum (MuSick Recordings). Check out this mix tape that lead singer Tonyo Szabo made for MAGNET.

Late Of The Pier “Best In The Class”
Late Of The Pier is one of the best new bands I’ve heard in a while. The way they use synths and reconstruct the well-known structure of a song amazed me at the first glance. “Best In The Class” is from their second album, and it’s probably the best new song I’ve heard in the last few months. Video

Gene Pitney “Town Without Pity”
I discovered Gene Pitney only a couple of years ago, and by now I must say he is my favourite singer. The beauty of this song’s honest silliness in lyrics paired with magnificent songwriting and performance blew me away. It’s worth checking out some old videos from Mr. Pitney. His look and moves during his performance are absolutely fantastic yet funny at the same time. Video

Siouxsie And The Banshees “Into The Light”
I’m not a longtime Siouxsie fan, but I’m starting to admire her work more and more. This song features the best combination of instrumental minimalism with really emotional and dramatic vocals. This combination can only work with a handful of great bands, like the Banshees. Video

The Cardigans “Carnival”
It’s a little sad that this band is mainly famous for “Lovefool” and for the song their singer performs with Manic Street Preachers. After listening to this tune, I always feel like a cute little blonde chick in love, even though I’m a hairy hetero guy. Video

Malajube “Dragon De Glace”
Malajube are from Montreal and they sing in French. Even though I can’t understand a word of their lyrics, I still try to sing along to their songs. This is true especially with this tune. I’m not a fan of melodramatic, orgasmic instrumental parts, but I think everyone would start headbanging after the second part kicks in, like I do. Audio

Super Furry Animals “Run-Away”
I could never really understand why good bands write “joke” songs intentionally. After listening to “Run-Away” from Super Furry Animals, I had to change my mind. This song is one of the saddest tunes I’ve heard while staying extremely humorous at the same time. This is especially true after watching the video. Video

The Beach Boys “Surfer Girl”
I guess Super Furry Animals’ “Run-Away” was heavily influenced by “Surfer Girl.” Even a group like the Beach Boys, who elaborated the perfect way of playing happy/cheesy music, can achieve a sadly beautiful touch in this song. A kind of feeling that, for me, is missing in most of their songs. Video

The Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster “Mission From God”
One of my favourite bands, the Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster have not made it big yet. I simply can’t understand why in the hell not. They have everything that could make a band well-known worldwide. Maybe their next album, which features this song, will take them to the next level and then they would be just a step away from ruling the whole wide world. Video

Mclusky “Lightsabre Cocksucking Blues”
No one and nothing could let me down so much that I wouldn’t start headbanging to this song after, like, five seconds. It’s both funny and angry, which makes this track the best cure for a fucked-up day. Video

Blur “Caramel”
Reminds me of the times when I thought I was extra intellectual and refined, even though I was only 16. I’ve become a bit more simple and way less snobbish, but this still remains as one of my favourites—and absolutely one of the most beautiful tracks of all time. Video
