Film At 11: Holy Ghost!

The ease with which dance music is made in the era of preset loops and drag-and-drop functionality has been well-documented at this point. Nevertheless, it’s worth reminding ourselves of the analog/digital divide when an act like Holy Ghost! comes along with an unabashed embrace of vintage synth, drum and guitar work featuring prominently in its undeniably catchy neu-disco sound. Like many dance artists, the Brooklyn band first gained notoriety by crafting great remixes for more well-known acts like Phoenix and LCD Soundsystem. Now, Holy Ghost! has come into its own by releasing the Static On The Wire EP on the stalwart DFA label—the sort of godfathers of disco-punk one might say. Holy Ghost! recently worked with director Ben Fries on a video for one of Static‘s standout tracks, “I Know, I Hear,” and the results are quite fun. Covered in a monochrome haze, the band performs in its rehearsal space alongside featured vocalist and friend Caroline Polachek (Chairlift). The camcorder-shot treatment feels quintessentially New York, making us want to clap along to Holy Ghost!’s disco vibes on more than a few of its upcoming tour dates with analog equals Chromeo.
