Film At 11: The Charlatans U.K.

Our best wishes for recovery go out to Charlatans drummer Jon Brookes, who collapsed onstage and stopped breathing during a Philadelphia show on Wednesday night. Brookes, a founding member of the long-running U.K. outfit, was hospitalized, and his health is reportedly improving. The Charlatans are perhaps best known as principals of the Madchester scene (along with the Stone Roses and Happy Mondays), and 1990 debut Some Friendly spawned the psychedelic hit “The Only One I Know.” Yet singer Tim Burgess and Co. stumbled out of that early-’90s rave with their songwriting faculties intact, and the group last week issued its 11th album, Who We Touch (The End). The golden regret pop of “My Foolish Pride” echoes Supergrass and Teenage Fanclub and is miles removed from the baggy beats of yore. In fact, the only thing that might be left over from the ’90s here is Burgess’ sweater.
