Film At 11: The Joy Formidable

To promote its new seven-inch single as well as debut album The Big Roar (set to be released by Canvasback/Atlantic in early 2011), the Joy Formidable has released a video for “Don’t Want To See You Like This.” The band members rocks out on a beach, they slo-mo jump into a river to retrieve a polaroid that has floated downstream, and frontman Ritzy Bryan ossifies into a tree woman. OK, so visual subtlety isn’t really their thing. Bryan comes off as some dreamy Natalie Merchant/Sinead O’Connor/Courtney Love goth/grunge nymphet, but that’s cool—she’s cuter than Alice Glass and more sincere than Emily Haines. Ritzy B. has, like, really blue eyes, and she sings into the camera with near-lachrymose abandon. Shot on the Gower Peninsula of Wales (where the song was written), this video acts as a postcard for the fecund-yet-deliberate emotivity that is the Joy Formidable.
