MP3 At 3PM: Freebass

Though they recently split, three lions of British rock music (well, three bass-playing lions, to be exact) had been collaborating over the last few years as Freebass, a trio whose music spanned from “alternative and dance rock to dub and Northern soul.” Comprised of legends Peter Hook (Joy Division, New Order), Mani Mounfield (Stone Roses, Primal Scream) and Andy Rourke (Smiths), Freebass built its songs around bass lines played in three separate registers, working with singers like Tim Burgess, Pete Wylie, Howard Marks and Gary Briggs to round out the pieces vocally. “Not Too Late” is the opening track of Freebass’ one and only LP, It’s A Beautiful Life, an unsurprisingly subtle, romantic rock jam that exposes the touch of its authors with little effort. Though that sounds like a barb, we wouldn’t have it any other way. It’s A Beautiful Life is out now on 24 Hour Service Station.
