Best Of 2010, Guest Editors: Bettie Serveert On Philippe Starck

As 2010 comes to an end, we are taking a look back at some of our favorite posts of the year by our guest editors.

BettieServeert852The members of Bettie Serveert are alt-rock survivors. They have been performing in various incarnations since 1986, and they released critically acclaimed debut album Palomine in 1992. Joining the core lineup of vocalist/guitarist Carol van Dyk, guitarist Peter Visser and bassist Herman Bunskoeke on new album Pharmacy Of Love (Second Motion) is drummer Joppe Molenaar (of fellow Dutch band Voicst). The group recorded the LP in relative isolation in Waimes, Belgium, in order to better concentrate on honing its sound, and the result is a mix of the classic Bettie Serveert vibe with new modern-rock flourishes. Van Dyk, Visser and Bunskoeke will be guest editing magnetmagazine.com all week. Read our Q&A with van Dyk.

Carol: Before we stayed at the Paramount Hotel in New York, I never knew I was into modern architectural design. These days, we usually stay at cheap motels, preferably in the middle of nowhere. But back in the ’90s, we had the opportunity to stay at this hotel, and that’s when I first heard about Philippe Starck. He designed everything in this hotel, from the door knob to the kitchen sink, and it looks amazing. Needless to say, I wanted to live there, forever. There’s this story about an elderly couple that used to own a house where the hotel was built. They didn’t want to move or sell their house, so the hotel made them an offer they simply could not refuse. Now they live in the hotel for free, including the room service.
