Okkervil River just released the first single off its upcoming album, I Am Very Far (Jagjaguar), which is out May 10. The video for “Wake And Be Fine” features the entire band in a film adaptation of one of those vintage concert posters from bands like the Doors or Led Zeppelin circa 1969, flashing lyrics in the background behind the group members, who are dressed like Jason Schwartzman in Rushmore. The song combines angsty, shouting-in-an-empty-room vocals with cigar-parlor piano jangling, and if it’s any indication, Okkervil River has retained the best parts of its alt-country roots and tweaked them to create a slightly more dramatic indie sound.
