From The Desk Of Laura Cantrell: West Tennessee

Kitty Wells Dresses: Songs Of The Queen Of Country Music is the fifth full-length from New York City singer/songwriter Laura Cantrell, and as you probably deduced from the album’s title, the LP pays tribute to country music’s first female star. Cantrell recorded the 10-track record in Nashville, the city where both she and Wells were born. Aside from covering some of Wells’ most loved songs, Cantrell kicks off the album with the title track, a song she co-wrote with Amy Allison. Cantrell will be guest editing magnetmagazine.com all week. Read our brand new Q&A with her.

Cantrell: Love to make it out to where my dad’s family is from in northwest Tennessee. We don’t get to go every summer, but I hope to this year. Everything seems a bit dryer and hotter in than back east. We’re gonna miss blackberry season, but I’d like to go on a wander that would include enough time in Halls to pay a visit to Murray Hudson, the antique map dealer who sold me a vintage railway map a few years ago. I’d keep going, though, eventually to Memphis and the mighty Mississippi. But I’m skipping Graceland this year and going to the W.C. Handy Home, inhabited by an elderly lady who will tell you stories about Handy for a small fee. Oh and there’ll be some BBQ on the way, too.

Video after the jump.
