The new Delta Spirit single, “California,” sparks thoughts of Phoenix, almost suspiciously. The melody and vocals practically seem to borrow from “Consolation Prizes,” though the lyrics don’t. With this song, Delta Spirit falls into the friend zone as frontman Matthew Vasquez bids farewell to an unknown companion, pulling the heartstrings of Nice Guys everywhere. Indeed, “California” is music for melancholy moods, eliciting thoughts of longing, grief and gradual acceptance. The band’s new album, Delta Spirit (Rounder), is out March 13.
