From The Desk Of Jon Glaser: Gear

You may recognize Jon Glaser, but probably only if he’s wearing a black ski mask. The NYC-based comedian writes, stars in and does pretty much everything else for Adult Swim’s Delocated, a reality-show spoof about a man in witness protection after testifying against the Russian mafia. This is where the ski mask comes in: To protect his identity from his television audience (and, obviously, the Russian mafia), Glaser’s character, aptly named Jon, wears a black ski mask and has his voice surgically distorted. Glaser started his career at Chicago’s esteemed Second City, and he’s since appeared in TV shows and films alongside some of his fellow comedians, with credits such as 30 RockCurb Your EnthusiasmBaby Mama and as voice talent in Aqua Teen Hunger Force. He spent five years writing and performing at Late Night With Conan O’Brien and recently published his first book, My Dead Dad Was In ZZ Top. Season three of Delocated is currently underway, and it’s well worth getting into. Wanna get to know the man behind the mask? Glaser will be guest editing magnetmagazine.com all week. Read our brand new Q&A with him.

Glaser: Upon seeing me pull up to a comedy show on my bike, wearing my Dickies work jacket with reflective tape, Giordana cold-weather cycling hat, Craft cool-weather gloves and Smith cycling goggles with clear lenses, my friend—the very funny Heather Lawless—said to me, “You boys and your gear.” I don’t care what it is, if there’s gear involved, I’m probably interested. Rather, if there’s gear involved, I’m probably more interested. I love hockey. One of the reasons I love it is all the sweet gear you get to wear, and the process/ritual of putting it all on before you play. I love my winter cycling commute from Brooklyn to Midtown to the Delocated edit because it means I have to put on more gear to stay warm. It was also an excuse to get some new gear, including my sweet waterproof Ortlieb backpack and Gore balaclava. Hopefully it gets so cold that I need to get some Shimano winter cycling shoes, or maybe I’ll just spring for some Vaude shoe covers. OK, this ended up being mostly about cycling gear, but this entry could have been an entire magazine, called Jon Glaser Bores You Talking About Gear, with articles about my new iPhone and the sweet case I got for it; Wigwam thermax hats; Icebreaker long underwear; Outdoor Research Highpoint cap; Dr. Dre Beats headphones; 13-year-old North Face winter jacket, which was made when North Face still made quality garments. I’ll stop here, but not before adding that I just ordered a pair of Kamik Blacktail winter boots. I wasn’t reading Black Tail magazine when I ordered them.

Video after the jump.
