Normal History Vol. 165: The Art Of David Lester

Every Saturday, we’ll be posting a new illustration by David Lester. The Mecca Normal guitarist is visually documenting people, places and events from his band’s 28-year run, with text by vocalist Jean Smith.

“It is Lewis, right?” she said, wondering if she’d gotten his last name wrong.

“Yes, it’s Lewis. Martin Lewis.”

“Oh good,” Nadine said with relief. “So, does a solo show sound all right?”

“Just like that?”

“Why not?”

“Don’t you need to see more of my paintings? I don’t have a portfolio.”

“As it turns out, you don’t need a portfolio because you already have a show booked,” Nadine said playfully, expecting Martin to be pleased, but he wasn’t. Nadine thought offering him a show was what he wanted.

Let’s slow down,” Martin said.

“Why?”

“Because I came in to submit this painting … ”

“Yes, I know,” Nadine interrupted. “You want to submit a painting to a graphic design show. It has been rejected, if you will, and I have given you a solo show.”

Martin looked at his watch. “I’m late.”

Nadine had never offered a painter a show before, but she expected it to be somewhat different than this.

“To be honest, Stickin’ It To The Man has stalled,” she said. “I’ve only had a few online submissions. I need another show before it. This is perfect for my schedule.”
