From The Desk Of The Green Pajamas: Tamara Rojo

Like its Southern California influences in the Paisley Underground (Rain Parade, Three O’Clock), named as an homage to the psychedelic heyday of Jefferson Airplane and Strawberry Alarm Clock, the Green Pajamas must hold the world’s record for most albums (somewhere around 30) recorded by a band with the fewest number of live appearances (somewhere more than 30) over a career that has spanned almost 30 years. Jeff Kelly and Co. recently released longplayer Death By Misadventure via longtime Pajamas label Green Monkey. Kelly and bandmates Laura Weller and Eric Lichter will be guest editing magnet magazine.com all week. Read our recent feature on them.

Kelly: Spanish ballerina Tamara Rojo is a kind of Audrey Hepburn of the dance world: very stylish, very sexy and very, very smart. Star and principal dancer of the London Royal Ballet, she has entertained that city for many years with her beauty and perfect technique. She is truly thrilling to watch, even if only on DVD, as I am obliged to do from time to time.

She has recently taken the job of artistic director of the English National Ballet, and there is currently some question of how often she will actually be dancing in the immediate future. Luckily for all of us, there are several performances on DVD available that document her always-sensuous work with the Royal Ballet. All three ballets—my favorites MannonLa Bayadére and Romeo And Juliet—feature Tamara and her wonderful partner, the impeccable, Carlos Acost.

To many little girls and a certain middle-aged man, Rojo appears no less than the perfect woman. She is why I love art. She is why I love women.
