Best Of 2012, Guest Editors: Little Hurricane’s Celeste “C.C.” Spina On Vintage Gear

As 2012 has come to an end, we are taking a look back at some of our favorite posts of the year by our guest editors.

Forgive the members of blues-rock duo Little Hurricane if they describe the past year as a whirlwind. Since their first practice in drummer Celeste “C.C.” Spina’s apartment in late 2009, they’ve gone from playing for crowds they could add up on one hand to earning the title of San Diego’s best new band and landing coveted spots at South By Southwest, Austin City Limits and Lollapalooza. Despite the fuss they’ve kicked up with their live shows and debut album, Homewrecker (Unknown Breakthrough), success hasn’t translated into overconfidence. Spina will be guest editing magnetmagazine.com all week. Read our new Little Hurricane feature.

Spina: I’ve got a couple of drum kits from the ’60s, and Tone’s guitars are from the ’50s and ’60s. We’ve been lucky enough to be able to record with vintage Neumann microphones, which have a sound that is hard to replicate. Playing on gear that has been used for generations before us is an honor, and we feel like it really adds to our sound.
