From The Desk Of Spacehog: The 10th Street Russian Baths

SpacehogLogoIn the 17 years since its auspicious start, plenty has happened to Spacehog—some of it not so great. And still, the group’s new release, As It Is On Earth (Hog Space), carries on almost as if there were no gaping 12 years of dead air since the 2001 release of the band’s last album, The Hogyssey. As It Is On Earth displays none of the derivative Bowie/T.Rex laziness of its predecessor, while harnessing manageable doses of the antsy experimental energy that fueled Resident Alien’s expansive 1998 follow-up, The Chinese Album. Spacehog frontman Royston Langdon will be guest editing magnetmagazine.com all week. Read our brand new feature on the band.

Royston Langdon: If you fancy a good flagellation in the midst of scantily clad East Villagers, the gay community in full force all around in the hottest place known on earth, then this is the place for you. On those cold winter days when I can’t stand being perished any longer, I’ll throw caution to the wind and head down to 10th Street between Aavenue A and First Avenue a hit the baths. These days, I often make it a social activity with a few of my closest and bravest friends. There is no way you can experience all that the baths have to offer without a complete restructuring of one’s physical, physiological and social structure. Alex, one of the masseuses, will tame the wildest of homicidal maniacs with his skills of scrubbing, kneading and whipping with oak leaves, etc. However, be careful to hydrate and not overdo it, otherwise one can feel quite unwell. Everything in moderation.
