From The Desk Of The Album Leaf: “The Goonies”

AlbumLeafLogoPerils From The Sea is a collaboration between Jimmy LaValle of the Album Leaf and Mark Kozelek. It’s a set of long, somber songs that melds LaValle’s spacious, orchestral electronic instrumentation with Kozelek’s forthright and world-weary vocals. They’re transfixing, often beautiful, sometimes unsettling. The collaboration grew out of mutual admiration. Kozelek had seen LaValle play a few times, both in his old band Tristeza and the Album Leaf, and was impressed; and he is a fan, especially, of Torey’s Distraction, last year’s soundtrack album from the Album Leaf. LaValle will be guest editing magnetmagazine.com all week. Read our new feature on him and Kozelek.

Goonies

LaValle: One of my favorite movies of all time. I was seven when it came out and maybe eight when I got it on VHS. I can watch this movie over and over again. There are so many little moments that crack me up that I can rewind and watch over and over again, especially of Chunk. Like, when Mouth makes him do the truffle shuffle to gain entry to the Walsh’s house. There’s a quick scene when the football gets kicked after the chicken is startled and lays an egg, Chunk follows the ball from left to right. It’s like a one-second cut or something ridiculously short. It happens so quick, and it’s so funny. Watch it again, and look for that part. The rest of the movie is a gem of course. Best childhood movie.
