The Morals Make MAGNET A Mix Tape

TheMorals

Indie-folk trio the Morals are joining the ranks of Feist and Kevin Drew in the Canadian music scene with their acclaimed debut, Music Tree Life Understanding. The band’s Todd Jeffrey decided to take a break from thinking about birds and landscapes and gave us a solid mix tape of the music he’s been into lately. Also, check out their song “Birds” below.

Nirvana “In Bloom”
Growing up listening to Nirvana was a determining factor on how I began writing songs. Nothing beats passion, pop and a little attitude for dynamics. The lyrics to this song are great. Nirvana was the reason I started playing music in the first place. I remember thinking to myself, “I’m left handed just like Kurt, cool!” Then my guitar teacher told me left-handed guitars are rare, and hard to find. Since Barrie had little to no selection for that sort of thing, I, being 13, said sure to learning right-handed. Only to find out there are plenty of left-handed guitars everywhere! Lame. I tried re-stringing my acoustic and busted the nut on my fret board! Needless to say I play right-handed now. Video

The Shins “Chutes Too Narrow”
I first heard the Shins when I was living in Toronto 2005-ish, and basically haven’t stopped listening to them since. I’m always drawn to great lyrics, and Jim Mercer is a fantastic lyricist, and songwriter at that! Video

Dan Croll “Compliment Your Soul”
My friend Patrick sent me a text one day with a link to a Dan Croll song. I think it was “From Nowhere.” Heard it, loved it, looked into Mr. Croll’s music and came across “Compliment Your Soul.” I love the percussion in this song. What a beautiful concept, complimenting another soul. It’s how I feel about this one gal on the daily … Hh. Video

Fleetwood Mac “Second Hand News”
I’m big into human behaviour and the relationships between people, and Fleetwood Mac takes the cake on relationship songs. Not that they have all the answers, but the way they harmonize while exploiting their feelings is awesome! Video

Metronomy “The Look”
This song has a great groove. I got hooked on this for a while. There’s something about an organ that I’m automatically drawn to. Must be all the tones going on, stimulating my brain. Harmony is where it’s at. The Beach Boys have engrained that into me from a young age. The video is fun for the kids, too! Video

Brian Wilson SMiLE (any song)”
Brian Wilson might actually precede Nirvana on my reasoning for getting into music. I used to listen to a live Beach Boys record in my room as a boy. The only catch was, there wasn’t a needle for proper listening. I attached a straightened staple to the head and literally listened with my ear to the record for any bit of amplified sound from the tip of the staple. It was the beginning of my life as a musician for sure. Thank you, Brian Wilson!!! Album
