From The Desk Of The Muffs: My Favorite Clothing Types

After a decade adrift, the Muffs have gotten their melodic pop groove back. Frontwoman Kim Shattuck has reunited with longtime backing members Ronnie Barnett (bass) and Roy McDonald (drums) for Whoop Dee Doo (Cherry Red/Burger). The Los Angeles-based trio will also be guest editing magnetmagazine.com all week. Read our brand-new feature on the band.

Shattuck: I am a female, so my look is a big deal to me. I’m rather obsessive about clothes, so if I find something I like, I wear it everyday until it’s rags. And it’s totally hard for me to find clothes I like at the stores because fashion is ridiculously stupid, and the ugliest clothes always end up at the stores.

But here’s a little list of what I want and what I look for.

Peter Pan-collared dresses
I love that look. What else can I say about it. Anyone with eyeballs can see that it’s the best look ever. I am a 50-year-old gal, but I still like dressing like a toddler.

3/4-inch sleeves
I worship the dress Marilyn Monroe wears in The Prince And The Pauper. It’s a white, kinda see-though affair with 3/4-inch sleeves. I’ve been chasing that look for a long time with varying degrees of success.

Shirts with fat horizontal stripes
Check out my Instagram sometime. I wear stripes all the time. All the fucking time, actually. It makes me feel normal.

Clamdigger-style jean cut-offs to the knees with frayed ends
I hate the short shorts that seem to be all the rage this year. Ladies walking around with gigantic dimpled asses hanging below the shorts line. Looks a bit like a loose diaper. Amazing. It’s helping me lose weight since everywhere I look I see people that make me lose my appetite. I wish they would see the light and embrace my favorite shorts, the clamdigger-style jean cut-offs with the frayed ends. I do it to all my pants in the summer. Obviously a reaction to being hot. But one day my sister and I were hanging out and I looked down, and my frayed end clamdiggers just looked ridiculous and we both started cry/laughing. Either it was a moment of clarity or a brief bit of insanity. I am wearing them right now with a three-day-old stripped shirt that I wear to bed and all throughout the day. It’s comfortable. I feel like me.
