From The Desk Of Delta Spirit: DirecTV Screensaver

Delta Spirit’s new album, Into The Wide (Dualtone), is full of anti-war and pro-working-class songs, steeped in literary and biblical images that will make them resonate with almost any listener. The music is deep and moody, playing off the sound of chiming rock guitars, driving rhythms and anthemic vocals against a thick wall of dark, almost industrial noise. The songs paint pictures of the disenfranchised, disillusioned and downcast citizens of our country, folks struggling to get by, but still maintaining their faith in the promises of the American dream. Delta Spirit will be guest editing magnetmagazine.com all week. Read our new feature on the band.

DirectTV

Kelly Winrich: I know everyone knows what I’m talking about here, though might not be as entertained by it as we are. It’s common with DVD players, too, but ours is DirecTV. Most of the time, our DirecTV satellite on the bus is searching for signal. And while it’s searching, the screensaver comes on, which is basically a blue DirecTV logo, slowly bouncing across the screen like the Pong arcade game. For some reason you get in a trance watching this dumb thing bounce around randomly, with a deep yearning for the logo to land perfectly in one of the corners of the screen. Most of the time, it’s fucking with you and it doesn’t hit the corner, but when it does, it’s the best feeling. I call this the “pure corner.” I realize how dumb this sounds, but someday down the line, whoever has had the patience to read this dumb paragraph, will be sitting at home and their DVD screensaver will pop on. You’ll be hypnotized and realize that I’m a genius.
