MAGNET Television: Q&A With Joan As Police Woman

We became big fans of Joan Wasser around the time MAGNET started back in 1993 via her work with the Dambuilders (which also featured Kevin March, who went on to become Guided By Voices’ longtime drummer). We’ve followed her career closely ever since, first with the underrated Those Bastard Souls, then Antony And The Johnsons, along with collaborations with the likes of Lou Reed, John Cale, Laurie Anderson, Rufus Wainwright, Joseph Arthur, Sparklehorse and Lloyd Cole. In 2002, Wasser introduced the world to her most-excellent alter ego Joan As Police Woman, and she’s been Wasser’s main gig ever since. JAPW has just released eighth album Cover Two (PIAS), a collection of Wasser covering songs by Prince, Neil Young, Blur, the Strokes, OutKast, Talk Talk and more.

MAGNET Television: Q&A With Peter Bjorn And John

Peter Bjorn And John have entered their third decade of making music together with ninth album Endless Dream (Ingrid). While all three Swedish musicians continue to work solo and with others (including fab females such as Robyn, Neko Case, Pretenders and Lykke Li), Peter Morén, Björn Yttling and John Eriksson dig a little deeper as their namesake trio. Aside from Endless Dream, PB&J have also made some early singles and EPs available digitally for the first time via Bandcamp.

MAGNET Television: Q&A With Steve Wynn (Dream Syndicate, Baseball Project)

John Coltrane stereo blues? Try Miles Davis, Sly Stone and Neu! instead. The Dream Syndicate is back with its third LP, The Universe Inside (Anti-), since re-forming in 2012, and it’s a glorious, groovy, improvisational mess of an album. Led as always by Steve Wynn—who also plays in the Baseball Project with drummer/wife Linda Pitmon and R.E.M./Minus 5 members Peter Buck, Mike Mills and Scott McCaughey—the Dream Syndicate has once again delivered a collection of songs we need in these times. Wynn has also just released Solo! Acoustic Vol 1, a collection of re-recorded songs from his back catalog available only on Bandcamp.
