MAGNET Contest: This one is actually hard (we think) and exceedingly stupid (we know). In order to win a novelty pirate eyepatch and fake moustache (along with other prizes - see below), consider the following: If a band/artist were a pirate, what would their pirate name be?

For example:
Howlin’ Pegleg Almqvist (the guy from the Hives)
Haarrrr! Maaarrrr! Superstaaarrrr!
Arrrge! Overkill (the “arrr!” thing is totally fair game)
Jolly Roger Daltrey (lame, but proof of how difficult this contest is.)
Bonnie Prince Billy (oh, wait.)

Five winners will be selected based on the following criteria for entries: saltiness, scurviness, bloodiness and the ineluctable “arrr!” factor. All winners will receive selections from MAGNET’s Prize Closet: CDs, music DVDs, autographed posters by the likes of Cat (O’ Nine Tails) Power and other assorted items. Only the grand-prize winner will receive the eyepatch and moustache.

Rules:
You may enter as many names as you wish, but you must include all entries in one e-mail.
E-mail your entry to newsletter@magnetmagazine.com (scallywags: hit “reply”).
All entries due by Friday, Feb. 13.
There are no rules. Pirates don’t follow rules.

INSIDE MAGNET #63 (MAY/JUNE) - OUT SOON!

MAGNET Contest: We’re honored and thrilled to have Tom Waits on the cover of the magazine for a second time in our publishing history. To celebrate the occasion, the MAGNET Dept. of Contests, Scrimmages & Raffles (a subsidiary of the Amusements division) came up with something that’s not quite as hard as Chinese algebra: Make up your own Tom Waits character. Waits has been known to populate his songs with all manner of oddballs: Big Jack Earl, Poodle Murphy, Burnt Face Jake, Knocky Parker and The Eyeball Kid, just to name a few. Come up with an addition to the carny canon and win big (or do it for the whimsy).

Each winner will receive an item from the Prize Closet, which contains such artifacts as autographed Bright Eyes and Azure Ray CDs, Pinback mousepads and a variety of T-shirts, stickers and buttons. MAGNET will choose the winners based on their imaginative and Waitsian qualities. (If you vow to dress as your character for Halloween, extra points will be awarded.) E-mail your entry to newsletter@magnetmagazine.com (circus freaks: hit “reply”). All entries are due by Monday, October 4.

INSIDE MAGNET #65 (OCT/NOV) - OUT SOON!

COVER STORY: TOM WAITS
In a time of war, lies and terror, it feels like the end of the world as we know it. Tom Waits does not feel fine.

SPECIAL SECTION: LOUDEN UP NOW
This election year, it’s especially important our rebels come with causes. MAGNET solicits essays and commentary from Steve Earle, Henry Rollins, Joan Baez, Bright Eyes, David Cross, Ani DiFranco, Victoria Williams, Pedro The Lion, Jello Biafra, Sleater-Kinney and others

FEATURES
When left to his own devices, Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist JOHN FRUSCIANTE can be as prolific as Guided By Voices and as thrifty as Fugazi. Frusciante’s new solo material provides a melodic, funk-free trip.

Once handpicked by John Coltrane to inherit the saxophone throne, ALBERT AYLER instead wound up dead in the East River at age 34. MAGNET examines the life of the man who embodied the spirit of free jazz.

PLUS
Interpol trumps the sophomore slump; Badly Drawn Boy makes MAGNET a mix tape; Joe Strummer’s final year is captured on film; the Dwarves recount their mischievous career; Sparta earns a purple heart during a tour with Incubus; and Brian Jonestown Massacre/Dandy Warhols documentary DIG! sparks a good, old-fashioned catfight. Plus interviews with Earlimart, Mclusky, National, Autolux, Inouk, Guided By Voices, Mark Lanegan, Comas, Martina Topley-Bird and Tanya Donelly.

REVIEWS
New releases from Joseph Arthur, Björk, Black Keys, Blues Explosion, Nick Cave, Cramps, Delgados, Faint, Robyn Hitchcock, Joan Of Arc, Kings Of Convenience, Libertines, Low, Luna, Macha, Mekons, Pinback, Silkworm, Spacemen 3, Tommy Stinson, Matthew Sweet, Talking Heads, Thrills, Velvet Crush, Paul Westerberg and more.
