Hello! How’s your news? Our news is about one click down the scrollbar, but now it’s time for another Lame MAGNET Contest. This one’s called Classic Rock Baked Goods. It’s the closest you’ll ever come to eating your favorite rock ‘n’ roll celebrity! Probably! To play, all you need to do is make a pun on a baked good and classic-rock band/artist, song title or album title. For example:

Rolling Scones
Jefferson Air Flan
Babka O’Riley
Bad Bad Leroy Brownies
Dark Side Of The Moon Pie
Gingerbread Houses Of The Holy
Sympathy For The Devil’s Food Cake
House Of The Rising Buns

Got it? Don’t give us no non-classic-rock crap, like Limp Biscuits. I mean, that’s really horrible. Nor will we accept non-baked goods, like Fleetwood Macaroni Salad. Do we seem like the kind of people who have time to waste? E-mail entries to magnet@magnetmagazine.com; five winners will get MAGNET T-shirts.

INSIDE MAGNET #55 (AUG/SEP) - IN STORES AND MAILBOXES SOON!

COVER STORY - PAUL WESTERBERG
Westerberg is kind of like a creepy uncle with war stories; except he used to be in a band (the Replacements) instead of the Army (a branch of our Armed Forces). And instead of actually going to war, he wrote songs (very well) and played gigs (very drunk) and made records (very well and very drunk). St. Paul is back, so we sent Jonathan Valania to go and write down the stuff he said. (By the way, Valania appears in the forthcoming Wilco documentary. We heard he’s interviewing Tweedy for last issue’s cover story and is wearing “a funny hat.”)

FEATURES
Please sir, one fun fact per MAGNET feature story: Neko Case collects pictures of animals wearing sunglasses. David Bowie and MAGNET writer A.D. Amorosi both enjoy Listerine strips. Pulp’s Jarvis Cocker really loves trees. Damien Jurado and Pedro The Lion each think the other’s songs are depressing. DJ Shadow owes some recent soundtrack work to the Cult’s Ian Astbury. (The story is about DJ Shadow, not the Cult, by the way. Not that there’d be anything wrong with a story about the Cult - it’s just not in this issue.)

Plus: Enon, Comet Gain, Sparta, Jim & Jennie And The Pinetops, Allen Clapp, Go-Betweens, Butthole Surfers and Gary Wilson.

REVIEWS
Read from left to right! Sleater-Kinney, Beth Orton, Flaming Lips, Get Up Kids, Queens Of The Stone Age, Guided By Voices, Spoon, Bright Eyes, Cinerama, Looper, Hot Snakes, Mayflies USA, Superdrag, Silkworm, The The, Jeff Tweedy, Waxwings and more!

MAGNETMAGAZINE.COM - It’s that thing that doesn’t generate us any revenue whatsoever!* Read new and exclusive interviews with Guided By Voices’ Bob Pollard, Exene Cervenka (X) and Anna Waronker (ex-That Dog). Plus, all-new concert reviews, album reviews and music news. (Ask Higgins, the online advice column written by the MAGNET dog, is temporarily suspended until later this week. Higgins bit one of our interns in the face. Bad Higgins.)

*This isn’t true. We do have an online store that sells subscriptions, back issues and T-shirts, and it turns a tidier profit than, say, WorldCom. But we don’t believe in banner ads, we just believe in us.
