Film At 11: Electric Six

If you’re at work and/or under 18, you might want to stop reading here to avoid the temptation to watch this new video from Detroit rockers Electric Six. Off just-released sixth album Kill (Metropolis), the Nabil Elderkin-directed video for “Body Shot” is equal parts nudity, Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas and Rob Zombie-style madness. You’ve been warned.

Give Patrick Carney Some: Ferrara Pan

Patricklogo100eFYou probably know drummer Patrick Carney as half of the Black Keys, the acclaimed Akron, Ohio, duo he formed in 2001 with guitarist/vocalist Dan Auerbach. But Carney has been equally prolific with his own ventures, including Audio Eagle (his record label and recording studio) and now Drummer (a band featuring four other Ohio skinsmen that just released Feel Good Together). Carney, the nephew of multi-instrumentalist Ralph Carney (Tom Waits, They Might Be Giants), always seems to have a lot going on, including Blakroc (a Black Keys project with rappers such as Jim Jones, Mos Def, Q-Tip, RZA and Ludacris with an album due next month) and a Black Keys New Year’s Eve show in Chicago. Carney will also be guest editing magnetmagazine.com this week. Read our Q&A with him.

ferrarapancandyCarney: Ferrara Pan makes my favorite candy, Lemonheads. They also make Alexander The Grape and Cherry Heads. Cherry Heads used to be called Cherry Clan, the box art of which featured little cherry-headed Chinese stereotypes. I read in the newspaper (read: a comic book) that Cherry Clan was fired because they were deemed “racist” by the media. They got banished to the Isle of Misfit Candy. That comic book was called Dork, by Evan Dorkin. He is a funny guy! Video after the jump.

MP3 At 3PM: Chuck Prophet

chuckprophet6113Chuck Prophet. If the name doesn’t sound shivers down your spine, then you clearly haven’t heard of the critically underrated musician and songwriter. Or maybe you’ve heard his songs, just sung by somebody else. Covered by artists like Heart, Peter Wolf and Solomon Burke—and acclaimed by Lucinda Williams and Cameron Crowe, among others—Prophet refuses to compromise in the name of profit, no pun intended. “Sonny Liston’s Blues” is from the new ¡Let Freedom Ring! (Yep Roc).
