Modern Skirts are anything but stagnant. Having broken onto the local Athens, Ga., music scene in 2005, the Skirts quickly made a name for themselves by selling out the 40 Watt Club (one of the most famous indie venues on the East Coast) and touring nationally for two years. The band’s debut album, Catalogue Of Generous Men, landed at number 11 on Paste magazine’s 50-best-albums-of-2005 list and produced sing-along hit “Pasadena.” With Modern Skirts afraid of being pigeonholed as a piano-rock band, things got a tad more experimental with 2008 follow-up All Of Us In Our Night, produced by David Lowery (Cracker) and Mike Mills (R.E.M.). The album as a whole resonated with dancy synth and an almost tribal feel. On January 18, the Skirts will redefine themselves once more with the release of Gramahawk, which gets back to the band’s roots and was intellectually crafted with a touch of dark humor.
