There are days when even the most devout music journalists, fans and record-store clerks would rather the atmosphere around them be completely silent. Listening, on these days, has begun to provide diminishing returns; feeling is all but lost, nothing is spectacular. Crawling back from the brink slightly, there are other moments when the hint of a song, subtle but undeniably present, can be just as powerful as being overwhelmed by a sound so enveloping it dominates every particle of mind, body and spirit. These are the days when a soundtrack to the unconscious provides more meaning, more transcendence, than a rock or pop record could ever hope to. And certainly more than absolute silence. It is in the former realm that Canadian-born, Brooklyn-based Kyle Bobby Dunn operates. On Ways Of Meaning, his fifth album and second for Desire Path Recordings, heavily processed guitar-and-organ suites drift patiently in and out of focus without ever meandering, each shift another nod to Dunn’s romantic sense of memory.
