Wanting or expecting reciprocity from a narcissist is an unhappy business. Engaging with those who lack empathy—yet who are uniquely skilled at constructing a passable version of what it is you want—is a dance of free will in determinism’s glass house of mirrors and marked cards. Understanding the floor plan is helpful in avoiding damage, but only walking away will leave you unscathed.
