Stella And The Very Messed’s new single walks the tightrope between confession and deflection. “Nobody likes being lied to, but there is such a thing as overburdening those around you with your truth—especially when it’s delivered without consideration of its impact,” says frontwoman Stella Maxwell. “I tend to surround myself with folks who are emotionally mature, so I wasn’t looking to write a song about someone who rejects the responsibility of self-evaluation and says things like, ‘I’m just being honest.’”
A taught tour de force of pumping keyboards and guitar-driven grrrl-rock ’tude, “Lack Of Secrets” is the second salvo from the Austin quintet’s upcoming LP, Big Familiar, available Sept. 19 via Double Helix. The band grew out of the creative bond Maxwell formed with David Hawkins during their 11 or so years with the modestly successful pop-punk Cruiserweight. Thus far, that bond has been unshakable.
“Dave had a heavy hand in the final synth-forward direction of ‘Lack Of Secrets,’” says Maxwell. “He was listening to a lot of Graveyard Club—and we’re always listening to Metric.”
We’re proud to premiere Stella And The Very Messed’s “Lack Of Secrets.”
