Every week, we’ll be posting a new illustration by David Lester. The Mecca Normal guitarist is visually documenting people, places and events from his band’s 42-year run, with text by vocalist Jean Smith.
In my utterly unique position of curator of this column, it is a total luxury that I get to interpret David’s illos by matching them to the lyrics of our songs. I don’t exactly skip the step of wondering what the artist means, but I do get to make the wild associations that I find thrilling. I feel trusted and supported in my role. This part of our relationship defines the band and, to a large extent, my adulthood. To have both a friend and creative collaborator who encourages and respects my contributions fortifies every aspect of my life. I wish it were so for everyone. Convince yourself that you’re awakening into such a dynamic. If there’s no one around to fill the role, be it for yourself.
