“Primordial Soup” was a sort of post-punk litmus test for Snowmen. “It’s one of the first songs we wrote together,” says frontman Zac Wilson.
Wilson and his fellow Snowmen—drummer Kendall Laughton and guitarists Josh Agri and Adam Parbhoo—first came together to hammer out Strokes covers before transitioning to original material. For their upcoming self-released LP, A Kick In The Face, they draw on a spate of influences that includes everyone from Parquet Courts, Car Seat Headrest and Daft Punk to Talking Heads, Minutemen and Hüsker Dü.
“At the time we recorded ‘Primordial Soup,’ we were listening to a lot of Black Sabbath and King Crimson,” Wilson says. “We wanted to make a song that felt a little uncomfortable, with dissonant, nasty guitars, smashed drums and thick bass.”
Lyrically, “Primordial Soup” is slightly less ambitious. “It’s about a shitty coffee shop in Brooklyn,” Wilson says. “It’s a sarcastic commentary on Bushwick elitism and post-grad NYC trendiness.”
We’re proud to premiere Snowmen’s “Primordial Soup. A Kick In The Face is out November 7.
