MAGNET Exclusive: Premiere Of Nobro’s “Doomtown”

“Doomtown” is precisely what the title implies. “It’s a place where all your worst fears come true,” says Nobro singer/bassist Kathryn McCaughey. “The song reflects our personal struggles and where we’re at as a band. It’s hard to keep going when life has a way of taking it all away.”

The Montreal-based garage/punk quintet was on the cusp of some well-earned vindication when, shortly before winning a Juno Award, guitarist Karolane Carbonneau lost her father and McCaughey’s dad was diagnosed with dementia. Both had no choice but to quit Nobro for a spell—and “Doomtown” is an exhilarating expression of the existential angst that’s been gnawing at them ever since. The track is accompanied by the bracing visual work of Christopher Grant, a Mi’gmaw filmmaker from New Brunswick’s Pabineau First Nation who struggles with schizophrenia.

“Even if it feels like everything is falling apart, we know we have each other,” says Carbonneau. “And that’s more than enough.”

We’re proud to premiere Nobro’s “Doomtown.”
