“Foxheart” was a difficult birth.
“It was a tricky song to complete, being started and discarded several times over,” says Twilark’s Canon Pence. “Thematically, the lyrics tie together the person I was as a teenager and the person I am today.”
The track was among three set aside during the Nashville recording sessions for The Taming Ties Create, the North Carolina-based singer/songwriter’s promising self-released debut, which came out earlier this year. The quirkier outcasts now make up the new Foxheart EP. And while Pence has acknowledged that their more experimental indie-folk feel was inspired by Sparklehorse, the title track has another reference point.
“Perhaps fittingly, the ballads of middle-period R.E.M. influenced me as a teenager,” says Pence. “They also influenced elements in the production of this recording.”
We’re proud to premiere Twilark’s “Foxheart.” Look for the EP on January 16.
