MAGNET Exclusive: Premiere Of Iguana Death Cult’s “I Like It, It’s Nice”

With a name like Iguana Death Cult, you know you’re dealing with band that doesn’t take itself too seriously. After all, it’s not like lizards are dropping from trees in IDC’s hometown of Rotterdam this winter. Fittingly, the Dutch art-punk outfit’s latest single, “I Like It, It’s Nice,” offsets serious social critique with pure silliness.

“It’s one of those goofy inside jokes that aren’t even that funny—but, to you, it makes sense,” says singer Jeroen Reek. “This one just got stuck in a rhythm, and we kept singing it like a bunch of jolly schoolboys while driving home after a show one night.”

The next day, Opschoor added bass and got to work on the lyrics. “Often, meaning will reveal itself in the process of writing,” he says. “When ambiguity arises, I always lean in.”

For a group that’s toyed with everything from krautrock to new wave to disco over three albums, the more direct approach of the upcoming Guns Out (Greenways) seems to mark a return to the garage. “It’s not a complete return to the old sound, but we definitely felt like we could move more freely as we stepped back into our own dimension,” says Reek. “Once we started writing this album, it all felt very natural—almost effortless.”

We’re proud to premiere Iguana Death Cult’s “I Like It, It’s Nice.” Look for Guns Out on April 10.
