MAGNET Exclusive: Premiere Of The Setting’s “By The Light Of The Moon” Video

The Setting’s retro-leaning instrumentals have a pleasing futuristic aftertaste, drawing inspiration from synth pop, the ’70s guitar recordings of the iconic ECM label and Brian Eno’s landmark ambient LPs from that same decade. The absence of drums makes the electro-acoustic vibe feel all the more untethered. Produced by Randall Dunn (Björk, Jim Jarmusch), the trio’s self-titled debut (Loyal Label) is anchored by Norwegian-born, New York-based bassist/composer Eivind Opsvik. He’s joined by keyboardist Elias Stemeseder and guitarist Will Graefe.

“By The Light Of The Moon” began as a sequence of repeating chords over a note from a bass pedal. “It has a touch of Dark Side Of The Moon, but it ends up sounding quite different,” says Opsvik. “But I’ve been a Pink Floyd fan since childhood, so I named it ‘By The Light Of The Moon.’”

Argentinian filmmaker Juan Pablo Tristàn directed the video, which was shot on location in Patagonia. We’re proud to premiere it here.
