MAGNET Exclusive: Premiere Of Lost Leaders Featuring Amy Helm’s “Atalanta”

“Atalanta” changed everything Amy Helm knew about storytelling.

“The song immediately pulled me in,” says the only daughter of rock legend Levon Helm, who also happens to be a pretty sharp songwriter in her own right. “The melody and words painted an interior emotional landscape.”

“Atalanta” underscores a pivotal moment in Run, an indie film starring Sarah Levy (Schitt’s Creek) due later this year. It’s the handiwork of Lost Leaders, made up of the Lumineers’ Byron Isaacs and former Lava Baby touring member Peter Cole. The duo produced and played on the entire soundtrack, also scoring the film.

The song was inspired by Atalanta, a swift-footed Greek mythological huntress and heroine. Aside from being a potent standalone single, it serves as a sort of running monologue inside the head of Levy’s lead character, an avid runner trying to outdistance herself from a full slate of personal issues.

“The task of finding the lead character’s voice through my own lens changed the way I performed the song,” says Helm.

We’re proud to premiere the Lost Leaders Featuring Amy Helm’s “Atalanta.”
