MAGNET Exclusive: Premiere Of Julez And The Rollerz’s “I Don’t Know You”

Turning 30 was a pivotal milestone for Jules Batterman.

“It made me confront the fact that I’ve outgrown parts of myself,” says the singer/guitarist for Julez And The Rollerz. “‘I Don’t Know You’ started as a song about looking back at my younger self and thinking, ‘Who is she?’ But naturally, it became more than just that.”

Perhaps by the sheer pull of positive energy and the winning personality of its leader, Julez And The Rollerz’s luminous garage rock has found a loyal audience in the fickle Los Angeles music scene. On June 26, the band welcomes its debut LP, Dirty Little Rock ’N’ Roller (Lolipop). It’s produced with typical panache and restraint by Alex Newport (Death Cab For Cutie, Mars Volta), who nips, tucks and polishes without sacrificing the energy and spunk that informed the group’s looser, more impulsive 2025 EP, Is This Where The Party Is?.

In keeping with the album’s transformative themes, “I Don’t Know You” touches on the vagaries of the ticking clock. “Time reshapes everything,” says Batterman. “Sometimes you lose significant people in your life, whether it’s friends, past lovers or family members. Sometimes you lose who you once were. We’re forever changing, as are the people around us. While scary, it’s beautiful to think about. I’m now 31, married and still unsure of what I want out of life. I’m hoping my past self is still proud of the path I’m on now.”

We’re proud to premiere Julez And The Rollerz’s ‘I Don’t Know You.”
