La Sécurité has a flair for the obvious.
“We wrote ‘Snack City’ when we were hungry,” says Éliane Viens-Synnott, lead singer for the irrepressible Montreal-based art-punk quintet.
She was also irked by some recent unsolicited flirty propositions and lame pick-up lines, which may explain the song’s agitated, high-energy constitution.
“I started imagining this self-centered character with food stains and a pizza face who spoke without thinking,” says Viens-Synnott. “We then tried to name-drop the many snacks from our many hours on the road.”
Fittingly, the video features of mash-up of touring footage interspersed food-focused shots. Director Philippe Beauséjour lent some thematic cohesion to the whole thing with vintage cookbook images.
“I wanted to bring a touch of animation, so I constructed Éliane’s face several times with food,” says Beauséjour. “I was a little inspired by Giuseppe Arcimboldo’s ‘Summer.’”
We’re proud to premiere La Sécurité’s “Snack City.” Look for the band’s sophomore release, Bingo! (Mothland/Bella Union), on June 12.
