of Montreal is no stranger to musical experimentation. It’s clear when listening to Kevin Barnes and Co. that the band is influenced by everything from vaudeville to afrobeat, each record building and evolving from the one before it. Paralytic Stalks, the band’s 11th album (out in February via Polyvinyl), is influenced by 20th-century modern-classical music. Barnes is hoping that fans will enjoy the “intimate and confessional” tone the LP takes. Album track “Wintered Debts” is an epic, seven-minute song that moves in and out of different rhythms and sounds. Starting off slowly with whispered tones, transitioning to a jangling, head-bobbing piano section and finally finishing with a haunting, trance-like piece, “Wintered Debts” is both brilliant songwriting and storytelling.
