Essential New Music: Descendents’ “Hypercaffium Spazzinate”

Descendents

On their first EP, Descendents extolled the virtues of “juicy burgers, greasy fries” on “I Like Food.” On their latest, the 50-something punk granddaddies lament elevated cholesterol levels on “Fat Burger.” What a difference 35 years makes. Fortunately, the lyrical nod to lipid profiles is the only hint of the band’s geezerhood status on its first record in 12 years. Indeed, whereas 2004’s Cool To Be You slowed tempos ever so slightly (and increased average song length by half a minute or more over previous efforts—almost prog by Descendents standards), the aptly named Hypercaffium Spazzninate finds the band reenergized and more characteristically succinct.

The breakneck “Feel This” sets the tone early, hearing Milo Aukerman sounding more angry young man than buttoned-down biochemist. Meanwhile, the band continues to play tighter than spandex on Chris Christie, boasting one of the best rhythm sections in punk, if not contemporary music. Can’t wait to see what these guys can do at age 60.
