MAGNET Exclusive: Premiere Of Jason Sinay’s Cover Of Neil Young’s “Cortez The Killer”

The original February release date of The Mountain, Jason Sinay’s first album in 13 years, was a no-go after health issues sidelined the celebrated guitarist for several months. Among other things, Sinay is known for his resilience, and he’s now ready to put some promotional weight behind the self-released double LP, which will be available October 24.

Over numerous decades, Sinay has collaborated onstage and in the studio with many big names, including Keith Richards, Neil Young, Lucinda Williams, Jackson Browne and Bob Weir. He’s also known for his tenure in the Dirty Knobs, the rock outfit led by Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers guitarist Mike Campbell. Looking to do his own thing, Sinay parted ways with the Knobs in 2022, getting to work on The Mountain not long after.

The Mountain’s first disc is a full-band affair featuring guitarist Bruce Watson (Foreigner), keyboardist Phil Parlapiano (John Prine) and other veteran players. The second offers Sinay’s stripped-down versions of the same tracks, including this cover of Neil Young And Crazy Horse’s “Cortez The Killer.”

“I’ve had the honor of sharing a stage with Neil Young, and I’ve played ‘Cortez’ live many times,” says Sinay. “When we were at Sunset Sound in Los Angeles for a recording session, I thought it would be a blast to warm up with it. We laid down the track in one take—and it was a keeper.”

We’re proud to premiere Jason Sinay’s cover of “Cortez The Killer.”
