MAGNET Exclusive: Premiere Of Palm Ghosts’ “God Help The Poor Billionaires”

Something tells us Palm Ghosts’ Benjamin Douglas isn’t a Tesla owner. “Big business wants us to believe their self-interests are our self-interests,” says the band’s guitarist.

And that’s pretty much the gist of “God Help The Poor Billionaires,” the first single from the group’s upcoming LP, Scare Tactics. “It’s a prayer for them to thrive and save humanity,” says Douglas.

Since forming in Philadelphia more than a dozen years ago and later relocating to Nashville, Palm Ghosts have drawn comparisons to everyone from Interpol to Echo & The Bunnymen. Counting their latest, they’ve released 10 albums on various labels, none of them short on monumental sonic moments, pointed messaging and post-punk ambition. Now streamlined to a core trio of Douglas, bassist Joseph Lekkas and drummer Walt Epting, Palm Ghosts are purportedly entering their “big pop era.” What better way to battle big business?

“The super-rich petition the poor for the one thing they themselves lack: empathy,” says Douglas. “That leads many of those below the poverty line to fervently defend policies that only benefit the wealthy. They become mouthpieces for the rich, so much so that they even pray for a God to help the rich help them.”

We’re proud to premiere Palm Ghosts’ timely and topical “God Help The Poor Billionaires.” Scare Tactics is expected later this year,
