There’s nothing Megan Cannon enjoys more than proving people wrong.
“Throughout my life, I’ve done a lot of things out of spite—for better or for worse,” says the Seattle native.
Cannon might not go so far as to call instant crush her spite band (with deference to Larry David). But “Grudge” is most certainly a thorough venting of her ongoing frustration with the music industry.
“At the very start, it seemed like people thought I was only capable of doing one thing or sounding one way, and those words really stuck with me for a long time,” says Cannon. “I felt a bitterness in my soul that would eat away at me.”
instant crush began as Cannon solo project in 2020 before morphing into a full-fledged quartet hellbent on reconciling the rock and pop factions of 2000s alternative with fat guitars, power-washy synths and emo sincerity. “Grudge” is the latest single from the band’s upcoming LP, I’m Sorry I Didn’t Bite My Tongue (Share It Music)—a title that pretty much says it all.
“I thought I was a genuinely awful person for never letting anything go and holding resentment in my heart, but it was that trait that I think made me work harder,” says Cannon. “I wanted to make something gritty, different and unlike something that would be expected from instant crush.”
We’re proud to premiere instant crush’s “Grudge.” I’m Sorry I Didn’t Bite My Tongue (Deluxe) is out March 13.
