Every week, we’ll be posting a new illustration by David Lester. The Mecca Normal guitarist is visually documenting people, places and events from his band’s 43-year run, with text by vocalist Jean Smith.
Every now and then, I see evidence of brilliance online, when a woman explains how a matriarchy functions differently than our failing patriarchy. Or a sociologist outlines the connection between slavery and the humorless bile that dribbles from the mouths of men who want women to do what we’re told because, for god’s sake, that would make things a lot better for them.
I could say, “Boys, boys, boys! Lighten up! Smile! Show us your pecs!” But I’m not into infantilizing, controlling or objectifying people.
