“Twist (Melted)” offers a sneak peek into the upcoming studio album from Philadelphia’s vibrantly multicultural KulfiGirls. The acoustic demo is part of the expanded double-vinyl edition of Divinity (DCxPC Live) out May 29. Released digitally back in February, Divinity was the culmination of a two-year gestation that saw the all-female quartet carve out a distinct niche with its unique marriage of expansive indie rock and Carnatic instrumentation.
KulfiGirls frontwoman Abi Natesh channels her South Indian heritage into an exotic, exploratory take on the emo esthetic. Key to the group’s sound is her command of the Saraswati veena, a plucked string instrument from South India that’s central to Carnatic music. You get an earful of it in lengthy solo form on this demo.
“We experienced a personal loss recently, which inspired this really angsty song,” says Natesh. “The full version will be on our next record, which is still in the works. But you can hear it live at our upcoming shows.”
We’re proud to premiere KulfiGirls’ “Twist (Melted).”
