MAGNET Exclusive: Premiere Of Anna May’s “Crying At Erewhon”

There’s an early-summer, marine-layer ache running through Anna May’s latest single—something a bit more complex than its SoCal shimmer implies.

“I wanted ‘Crying At Erewhon’ to reflect the analog echo and golden-brimmed recordings of L.A. favorites like the Mamas & The Papas, the Carpenters and the Beach Boys to really give the song the glistening glow it deserved,” says the Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter. “But I decided it would feel too dated, and I wanted the song to sound like something brand new.”

Produced by May and tracked at Glendale Guitars in Arlington, Texas, “Crying At Erewhon” (Blackbird) falls somewhere along the pliable continuum between confessional folk and cosmic chamber pop, with nods to obvious influences like Jeff Buckley and Mazzy Star. A self-contained unit who handles her own publicity, May has done quite well on her own so far. A previous single, “Elegy,” is her love letter to San Diego, where she’s found an enthusiastic audience through the acclaimed Art Of Elan concert series and opening slots with acts like Ariel Pink.

“Crying At Erewhon” marks May’s first release of 2026, and we’re proud to premiere it.
