Graham Hill’s “Monster In My Head” was inspired by a late-night conversation with his son.
“He was having trouble falling asleep consistently as he was hitting his teenage years,” says the New Orleans-based singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and architect. “The line ‘When I hear the smallest thing, and it snowballs into a scream’ was pretty much verbatim how he described the issue to me.”
The Halloween-appropriate track is the debut single from Hill’s first proper solo album, Taking In Stars, due January 22. In this case, the monster his son couldn’t shake was the music playing in his head—an experience that resonated with his dad.
“I have an active mind and sometimes obsessive tendency to overthink,” says Hill. “Especially when there are unresolved or uncertain things playing out in my current day-to-day reality.”
When Hill isn’t making music, he operates his own design firm focused on custom residential layouts and community-centered architecture. Musically, he’s probably best known for his work as the drummer for Beach House. On the self-released Taking In Stars, Hill trades the more atmospheric electronic textures of Beach House and his previous solo project, Roman Ruins, for a more direct, narrative-driven approach rooted in Southern-tinged folk rock. Co-produced by Hill and Oscar winner Donald Markowitz (Van Morrison, Taj Mahal, Dr. John), the album features contributions from guitarists Gabe Stillman and Shane Theriot (Neville Brothers, Willie Nelson), among others.
We’re proud to premiere Graham Hill’s “Monster In My Head.”
