The video for the Flaming Lips‘ “Powerless,” off last year’s awesome Embryonic, features a half-naked chick bound and gagged to a chair in the middle of a sun-drenched savannah. Probably intended to show powerlessness, but it’s creepy and disconcerting. There’s a wayward lemur that scurries around her feet as the tinkling, film-score-like instrumentals and haunting vocals churn your stomach. A strange choice for a single, but the Flaming Lips are the Flaming Lips, and they have enough clout in the music biz to get away with sideways artistic expression.
