Hardcore will never die, at least while Keith Morris is still alive and kicking. The 55-year-old Morris co-founded the legendary Black Flag with Greg Ginn before leaving the band three years later to start the equally seminal Circle Jerks with future Bad Religion guitarist Greg Hetson. That band lasted a decade, though since 1994, the Circle Jerks have continued to tour sporadically but haven’t released a new album since 1995. That was going to change when the band convened last year with producer Dimitri Coats (Burning Brides) to work on new material. The result, however, was Morris quitting the CJs and forming OFF!, a new hardcore supergroup with Coats on guitar, Steven McDonald (Redd Kross) on bass and Mario Rubalcaba (Rocket From The Crypt, Hot Snakes) on drums. OFF! recorded four EPs that will be released as a vinyl boxed set, First Four EPs (Vice), on December 14. The band will also be guest editing magnetmagazine.com all week. Read our Q&A with Morris.
Mario: This smorgasbord of a delight should be renamed the “San Diego Burrito,” because it only really exists down here. Don’t see it offered up in L.A. much. Mmmm. OK. Carne asada mixed up with french fries (gotta be skinny ones), cheese, sour cream and a dash of salsa fresca. You are def gonna be stuffed and chuffed after this. So when you visit S.D., just try it. The origins of this mysterious concoction are unknown to these food-blind eyes. But there are many fine establishments that make a quality Cali burro. Check out Roberto’s, Filiberto’s, El Cuervo, Santana’s and Especial Norte and see for yrself. Space out yr meals cuz you’ll get called a fatty real quick if you don’t watch it. Word to the wise is do not skateboard or play drums right after devouring one of these. I tried both and failed miserably. I tried to grab a backside “method” air, and when I bent down to grab, I couldn’t reach my deck cuz of my filled gullet and before I knew it I was sent off catapulting over and way above the wall that I wanted to so desperately launch off of. Not hot. So just chill afterwards.
Video after the jump.
