Smith Westerns are gearing up for a slew of concert dates this month and next in support of their sophomore LP, Dye It Blond (Fat Possum). Lead single “Weekend” jostles with a flanged-out guitar riff reminiscent of the best parts of mid-’90s Britpop. The video for the song catches the group doing what all minor-indie-celebrities do when they’re underage and living in Chicago: smoking cigarettes, walking around in the cold and hitting up a mall (possibly to seem “ironic”). The clip ends with an evocative shot of honey dripping over a tightly grasped mic. It may be a little on the nose, but so are Smith Westerns, and that’s why we love ’em and are keeping ’em out of college.
