Before Stephen Malkmus officially transforms from guitar geek to electronic egghead with the March 15 release of Groove Denied (Matador), the Pavement frontman got his rock ya-ya’s out via a couple shows with the Jicks. At Brooklyn Steel, Malkmus and Co. played a 16-song set, half of which consisted of songs from last year’s Sparkle Hard. While the rest spanned the Jicks’ two-decade career, Malkmus tossed the crowd a couple Pavement bones as well (“Starlings Of The Slipstream,” b-side “And Then (The Hexx)”). MAGNET photographer Wes Orshoski was there and born to be a camera.
